What is a Modern Nomad?
A modern nomad or "Monad" is one who lives a relatively modern life, or a life in modern society, but not by modern 'residence' centric means. More than that though, a monad is a self reliant individual, that makes provisions in their lifestyle, that equip them to handle things like unemployment, natural disasters, wild transient itches that motivate them to just packup and leave, without massive amounts of money, or government/social aid. In the terminology of survivalists, this is called a BOP, or a bug out plan. What makes a Monad different than a survivalist though, is that a Monad lives their plan, they dont simply plan and wait.
What is the purpose of this website?
The purpose of this site is to provide a conceptual and practical basis for people who find the idea of being a "Monad" appealing. It also serves as a template for my aspiration to become one myself. It provides them with equipment
What would possess anyone to become a modern nomad on purpose?
I cannot speak for anyone else, but i can speak for myself. Since i was a little boy, I always dreamed of pulling up my roots and becoming something more independent. I do not like artificial boundaries, especially when they are imposed, or suggested by people who have never tested them. I have a problem with authority, and maybe a problem with long term responsibilities. I do not like feeling trapped, or like I am at the will of some external force. I have always had a wild spirit, and have always sought to be something with a little more personal dignity than the modern man.
That said, at about age 19, I decided it was time to stop rebelling, and become a man. I got a job at a prominent university, as a financial auditor. I did this for about 4 years, and decided to join the united states army. One year into my military service, i find myself wanting for the lifestyle i dreamed of as a little boy. I went from an almost total lack of obligation, and responsibility, to more obligation and responsibility than most people ever have.
So, I got to thinking, and, it's strange, that something that feels this uncomfortable and loathsome to me, is the way I HAVE to live my life.. the only way anyone does. Because I honestly thought this was the case. I had not, and still have not, met a single other person with aspirations of a self reliant nomadic lifestyle, much less anyone actually practicing such a thing.
The benefits of such a thing are wide reaching. First and foremost, is the benefit of saving some amount of money. Housing costs something. And with the concept of housing, go the concepts of water and electricity utilities, land taxes, cable bill, etc etc. Something i find more valuable, is the idea that one can survive, and even thrive, on so little of the socioeconomic 'foundation' that people at large think are necessary. And if one could sustain good paying employment along side such a nomadic lifestyle… think of the money they would be able to save up! More over, think of the luxury they could enjoy, simply by abandoning the luxury of compliance with the false idea that laying down roots is the first step to success.
Ok, but what kinds of information might i find on this website?
Anything related to modern nomadism. This includes information on staying out of the elements, getting around, making money, wilderness survival, and how to survive most optimally in low to no money situations. Also covered, are how to wash your clothes, how to get mail, shower, and other things people consider privileges of residential humans.
In summary of this introduction…
The goal of this wiki is to come to some sort of solution to the concept of permanent residence. The product of this exercise, will of course be of some use to the part of humanity that likes living in houses as well. The nature of vagrancy makes every situation a temporary one, and ideally, the modern nomad will always keep the option of reverting back to domestication available. So even if you don't want to be a new age hobo, the material found here could be of an immense amount of utility, to the outdoorsman, the student, and those simply looking for a way out of a situation, that doesnt preclude finding a way in to another more favorable one. If nothing else, the idea of minimalist living has some asthetic value to everyone on some level, and if not practiced full time, could make at least, for a very unique and interesting hobby.
